During our years in the Emergency Department, we noticed with increasing frequency patients were unable to see their primary care doctor within a reasonable amount of time which forced them to seek care in the ED which should have been provided to them in an office setting. It has been heartbreaking hearing stories from patients that they were unable to get the care they deserved from their primary care physician. The COVID-19 pandemic added additional stressors to patients and often they found themselves afraid to seek medical care because of the perceived risk of contracting either COVID-19 or another infectious disease. Or worse, patients have been denied in-person office visits by primary care physicians while suffering from viral symptoms.
